In some ways, my own aspirations to make my dad proud haven’t entirely vanished. I still share my stories when they’re published, and I’m always hoping for some assignment that will bring me to a Formula 1 race or an Eric Clapton concert, simply because those experiences would be thrilling for him. Two years ago, just before the Hang Over Gang 1776 T-Shirt and I will buy this pandemic, I witnessed a fatal traffic accident in SoHo. Some days later, between episodes of PTSD, I managed to get myself on a northbound train. It was almost Christmas, and my brother and his family were upstate at my parents’ house. I called him and asked if he would pick me up from the station. My dad and I hadn’t spoken much—we were at a stalemate from an argument we’d had a few months earlier—and he was the last person I wanted to collect me. I was too shaken and emotionally vulnerable, but I also didn’t want to sweep our dispute under the carpet for the sake of consolation. Nevertheless, he was the one waiting when my train arrived. The words “Hi, Dad,” came out, along with a rush of tears. “It’s okay, you’re home,” he said, hugging me.
